Privacy policy

WYE Media Holdings LLC (“we,” “us”) runs aku.world, the home of the Aku book series by Micah Johnson (the “Site”). This policy explains what personal information we collect through the Site, how we use and share it, and the choices you have. Purchases in the Aku Store at shop.aku.world are covered by the Aku Store privacy policy.

Information we collect

Information you give us.

  • Email sign-up. Your email address and, if you choose, whether you are a parent, teacher or librarian. You confirm you are 18 or older when you sign up.
  • Book quiz game reward. A grown-up’s name and email address, plus the game results and player nickname they choose to put on the reader’s diploma.
  • Messages you send us. Whatever you include when you email us, for example to request a school visit or ask about a sculpture.

Information collected automatically. Like most websites, our hosting provider receives basic technical information when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you view, so it can deliver and secure the Site. The Site loads fonts from Google Fonts, which also receives your IP address. We do not use advertising cookies or tracking pixels. The Site uses your browser’s local storage to remember small settings on your own device, such as whether you have already signed up or seen the opening animation.

How we use your information

  • To send the emails you asked for: the launch-day alert for Aku: Battle for Pyra, and news about the books, free activities and school visits.
  • To send the book quiz diploma and reward email.
  • To answer your messages and schedule school visits.
  • To run, protect and improve the Site, and to comply with the law.

How we share your information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for targeted advertising. We share it only with service providers who help us run the Site, under their own privacy terms:

  • Mailchimp (Intuit) stores our email list and sends our emails.
  • Cloudflare hosts and secures the Site and processes sign-up forms.
  • Viverse hosts the book quiz game shown on the Site.
  • Shopify runs the Aku Store.

We may also disclose information to comply with the law, to protect our rights and users, or as part of a business transaction such as a merger. Links to booksellers like Amazon or Barnes & Noble take you to their websites, which have their own privacy policies.

Children’s privacy

Aku is written for readers ages 8 to 12, and kids are welcome to explore the Site, print activities and play the game. Our sign-up forms are for grown-ups only: you must be 18 or older to join our email list, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email [email protected] and we will delete it.

Your choices and rights

  • Unsubscribe anytime with the link at the bottom of every email.
  • Access, correct or delete. Email us to see the personal information we hold about you, fix it or delete it.
  • Where you live. Depending on your state or country, including California, the UK and the European Economic Area, you may have more rights, such as portability, objecting to or restricting processing, and withdrawing consent. Where we rely on your consent, withdrawing it does not affect earlier processing.

We will not discriminate against you for using these rights. We may need to verify your identity first, and you may use an authorized agent. If you have a complaint, contact us, and depending on where you live you may also contact your local data protection authority.

Security and retention

We use reasonable measures to protect your information, but no method is perfectly secure. We keep your email address while you are subscribed and for as long as needed to meet legal obligations, and we delete it when you ask.

International transfers

Our service providers may store and process your information in the United States and other countries. When we transfer information from the UK or European Economic Area, we rely on recognized safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the new version here and change the “Last updated” date.
